Red Hat公司于2003年9月底宣布,将原有的 Red Hat Linux 开发计划与 Fedora Linux 计划整合成新的 Fedora Project.Fedora Projcet 将由 Red Hat 公司赞助,以社群主导、支持的方式,开发 Linux 发行版 Fedora Core.而 Red Hat 公司原本开发 Red Hat Linux 的工程团队也将持续参与此一发行版的开发工作,并鼓励更多有兴趣的自由软体使用者参与,以期让这个新的发行版成为真正以自由软体开发模式的系统,并能够更 趋近于一般大众的需要.此外,Fedora Project 也被 Red Hat 公司视为一个新技术的研究园地,其所开发的各项技术有可能在未来被纳入 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (企业版) 中使用.

由 于 Red Hat 公司未来将不再继续免费版 Red Hat Linux 的开发工作,而由合并产生的 Fedora Project 接手后续新发行版本的开发工作.因此简单来说,Fedora Core 取代了原来的 Red Hat Linux.今后与 Red Hat 公司相关的 Linux 发行版,将更明确的区分为免费、但不提供技术支援的 Fedora Core；以及需要付费购买,有技术支援服务的 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (企业版).

既然 Fedora Core可以说是接续先前 Red Hat Linux 的发行版,Red Hat Linux 原有的功能及特色在 Fedora Core 1是否也都还存在呢？当然！Red Hat Linux 原本好用的工具软体,以及稳定、强大的特色,都仍然可以在 Fedora Core 1 身上看到.此外,Fedora Core 1 还增加了一些新的功能,纳入了一些较新版本的软体.

“The Fedora Project is an open source project sponsored by Red Hat and supported by the Fedora community. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may eventually make its way into Red Hat products. It is not a supported product of Red Hat, Inc.”

The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, generalpurpose operating system exclusively from open source software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year, with a public release schedule. 那么,什么是Fedora 项目呢？
Red Hat Linux 现在已具有两个派生物：Red Hat 企业版以及Fedora 项目.
